Express Raja Review

Movie Name : Express Raja (2015)

Cast :: Sharwanand, Surabhi

Music : Praveen Lakkaraju
Director : Merlapaka Gandhi
Producer :: Vamsi, Pramod

Rating :: 3/5

About Film ::

Express Raja makers surprised one and all by pitching it against big films for this Pongal. The confidence shown by the makers and the impressive trailers has created a buzz for this film. Merlapaka Gandhi who made an entertaining film Venkatadri Express teamed up with Sharvanand for Express Raja. Let's see if they have succeeded in delivering a decent entertainer.

Raja (Sharvanand) and his uncle (Prabhas Srinu) are happy go lucky type characters. Raja falls in love with Amulya (Surabhi) whose marriage is fixed with Keshav Reddy. Raja is chased by few rowdies as he snatches a dog for the sake of his love. He is not aware of the diamond hidden in its dog collar. Rest of the movie is about how Raja gets everything right including his love and family.

Performance ::

Sharvanand character reminds us of Run Raja Run. He is energetic and enthusiastic in the lead role. He puts his comic timing to good use.
Surabhi performence is good she is attached to the character and she looks very fine. Prabhas Srinu got a full length character and he did well. Saptagiri is hilarious. Urvashi is irritating. Shakalaka Shankar entertains. Dhanraj's character is used well. Harish is good as the baddie. All the characters have purpose and everyone did a good job in their respective roles.

Analysis ::

Like the title, "Express Raja" is combination of two movies "Run Raja Run" and "Venkatadri Express". The coolness factor of "Run Raja Run" and the screenplay method of "Venkatadri Express" dominate the movie though there is not much story. Whatever the basic story the director has written has almost come to an end just after interval. Hero trying to win heroine's love by handing her puppy that was lost is a very thin line. The fun moments are enjoyable when the basic story is there but beyond that dreariness sets in. First the film begins in Hyderabad, then moves to Vizag, again comes back to Hyderabad, later proceeds to Nellore and surrounding areas, like a bus moving many routes but not reaching to the expected destination, the film moves on and on before coming to the conclusion.

Even if the scenery is beautiful, the journey gets boring if the travel extends beyond stipulated time. That is what we feel with Express Raja post interval. First half is full of fun as there is some nice banter between hero and heroine, and the comedy performance by Saptagiri. The songs and visuals keep us glued to the seats without worrying about anything.The issue is many unnecessary tracks like Kesava Reddy (Uttaman) and his mother's (Urvashi) episode also come in during the course of the film.
Towards the end, there is another recording troupe's farce drama, which could have been avoidable and don't make impact to the screenplay. All in all, the film has rich production values, good music and some enjoyable comedy. A passable entertainment for sure but lot of drama could have been avoided.

Verdict :: Nice movie Lot of Fun Watch this movie

Dictator Review

Movie Name :: Dictator (2015)

 Cast :: Balakrishna, Anjali
 Music :: Thaman
Director :: Sriwass
Producer :: Eros International

Rating :: 2.7/5

About Film ::

Dictator is Balakrishna's 99th film. The veteran superstar is one film away from reaching a landmark. Dictator caught the attention of Balakrishna fans with colorful promos and posters. Clash with Nannaku Prematho made it even more interesting as the team has shown tremendous confidence in the product. Did Sriwass pull off another Loukyam with Dictator? Can this be another Legend for Balakrishna

Chandrasekhar Dharma (Balakrishna) is one of the biggest entrepreneurs in India. He locks horns with a powerful lady Mahima Roy (Rati Agnihotri) who is responsible for killing the father figure of Chandrasekhar. His wife Katyayani (Anjali) gets stabbed by Mahima's men. On his wife's request Chandrasekhar leaves Delhi and changes his identity to live as a common man. But the past comes haunting back at him.

Performances ::

Balakrishna is particularly stunning in the getup of a rich man. This is certainly his best look in recent times. He is so good in those blazers and shades. On the performance front Dictator doesn't offer anything new to the vastly experienced actor. He did his best to keep the flow going but the script is too weak for him to totally rescuing it.
Anjali enters only in the second half of the film. She did alright. Sonal Chauhan adds glamour to the proceedings. Senior actress Rati Agnihotri is just okay. Suman is good and so is Nasser. Aksha is seen in a brief yet important role. Pruthvi's comedy didn't click. For a change he didn't do any spoofs in this film and couldn't make an impact with regular comedy. Vennela Kishore and Shakalaka Shankar too failed due to poorly written characters.

Analysis ::

While Dictator has many villains in the story, the real villains of the movie are its story and screenplay writers – they have churned out beaten to death story with a formula screenplay that drags on and on without any reason. Last year the writers team of  Kona Venkat, Gopi Mohan, Sreedhar Seepana had given some of the worst movies like Bruce Lee and Soukyam. They have come up with even bad story and screenplay for Dictator.  Since the release of “Samarasinha Reddy”, we have been seeing this formula - Balakrishna appearing as “simple worker” in the first half and later in the flashback he is revealed as big businessman/factionist guy. How long would Balayya accept such clichéd stories? Except Boyapati, no director in the recent times has made a good mass masala movie with Balakrishna.

Sri Wass too has failed to present Balakrishna appealing as he has selected story-screenplay that belongs to 90’s. Although first half of the movie seems okay thanks to some comedy and songs, the second half is unbearable as it moves on boring manner and puts us in sleep mode.  Not a single thread or scene that is intelligent or decent enough to appreciate can be found in the second half. And the climax is also very boring.  Director Sri Wass and writers have failed Balakrishna. All in all, “Dictator” is a mess. Except for Balakrishna and Anjali’s presence, the movie doesn’t have anything to talk about.

Verdict :: After watching Simha and Legend we have to expect Dictator as in high range but                  this movie not reaches all expectations but film is good, some what boring

Zidane era at Real Madrid off to a cracking start

Barcelona cruised to the top of the Spanish Liga Saturday with a 4-0 caning of Granada, with Lionel Messi putting away his first hat-trick of the season.
Barca are now one point above second-placed Atletico Madrid, who will retake top spot if they win Sunday at fifth-placed Celta Vigo.
Third-placed Real Madrid are just one point below Atletico after a 5-0 destruction of Deportivo La Coruna featuring a hat-trick for Gareth Bale, in what was a promising debut on the Real bench for new coach Zinedine Zidane.

Saturday started with Barca trouncing Granada 4-0, with a hat-trick from Messi plus a final goal from Neymar.
The little Argentine - who is favourite to win the FIFA Ballon d'Or Monday - has scored five goals in two matches, starting with Wednesday's cup brace against Espanyol.
Messi opened the scoring against Granada in the eighth minute by turning in a centre from Arda Turan - who was making his league debut for Barca - then quickly made it 2-0 by finishing a move between Neymar and Luis Suarez.
Messi completed his hat-trick in the 57th minute by turning in the rebound after Neymar had hit the post, then Neymar ended the rout by making it 4-0 seven minutes from the end.
"The final score makes it look like an easy match, but it really wasn't," Barca coach Luis Enrique said.
"I was pleased with my players today, they showed a lot of initiative and creativity."
Aleix Vidal made a promising league debut for Barca at right-back. Like Turan, Vidal signed for Barca last summer but has been unable to play until this week because of the 2014 transfer ban from FIFA, for having underage foreign youngsters in the club's youth scheme.
"Arda and I knew when we signed that we would have to wait for six months," Vidal said.
"We are both delighted to be finally playing, and both working hard to adapt ourselves to the team's style ... We just want to help the club in whatever way we can."
Meanwhile, the defeat in Barcelona left Granada fourth bottom.
"We knew we were going to have a difficult time of it today," Granada defender David Lomban said.
"Barca are a wonderful team, they never stop coming at you from all directions. You can never relax playing against them, there is always a new threat just around the corner."
Later Saturday, Zidane made a successful debut on the Real Madrid bench, with a 5-0 thumping of defensively feeble Deportivo.
Gareth Bale banged in a hat-trick for Real either side of two goals from Karim Benzema, as optimism returned to the Estadio Bernabeu after the unhappy reign of Rafa Benitez.
"What I most enjoyed today was the attitude of the players. It is not easy to win 5-0," Zidane said.

I would like to say thanks to the fans for the warm reception they gave me today. But the fans come to see the players, not the coach ... There are certain things we need to improve, but we have time to do that."
Meanwhile, his Deportivo counterpart Victor Sanchez said: "We made too many mistakes in defence today to be able to compete against a top team like Real Madrid ... We were far too innocent and generous."

Also Saturday, Sevilla moved up to sixth with a 2-0 home defeat of Athletic Bilbao, on a brace from Kevin Gameiro.
Bilbao veteran Raul Garcia suffered a serious knee injury, and his team fell down to seventh.

Getafe beat struggling Real Betis 1-0, on a goal from Alvaro Vazquez, and moved up to 12th. Betis - who have picked up just two points in six games - are now 14th, with coach Pepe Mel in massive danger.
Saturday's late game saw bottom team Levante beat fellow strugglers Rayo Vallecano 2-1, on goals from Deyverson and Jose Morales.
Levante now have 14 points, Rayo and Sporting Gijon have 15 apiece.

Modric admits Benitez's sacking was 'good' for Real Madrid

Luka Modric admits Rafa Benitez’s sacking has been a positive move for Real Madrid and believes the results are evident following Saturday’s 5-0 win over Deportivo La Coruna.

A hat-trick from Gareth Bale, along with a double from Karim Benzema, handed a comfortable first win for Zinedine Zidane, who replaced Benitez on Monday.

Reports had claimed that several of Madrid’s key players were unhappy with Benitez’s leadership, and Modric concedes the Spaniard’s departure has been positive for the team.

"I want to thank him for what he has done,” Modric said after Saturday’s victory.

“But to be honest, I think the change has been good.

Emma Watson Launches Feminist Book Club

She posted a statement on her facebook page about her club

"As part of my work with UN Women, I have started reading as many books and essays about equality as I can get my hands on. There is so much amazing stuff out there! Funny, inspiring, sad, thought-provoking, empowering! I’ve been discovering so much that, at times, I’ve felt like my head was about to explode… I decided to start a Feminist book club, as I want to share what I’m learning and hear your thoughts too.
The plan is to select and read a book every month, then discuss the work during the month’s last week (to give everyone time to read it!). I will post some questions/quotes to get things started, but I would love for this to grow into an open discussion with and between you all. Whenever possible I hope to have the author, or another prominent voice on the subject, join the conversation.
If you fancy it, please join up and participate. Everyone is welcome. I would be honoured!

No Winner in Record $949.8 Million Powerball Lottery Drawing, Officials Say

There were no jackpot winners in any state in Saturday's biggest-ever $900 million Powerball drawing, and the jackpot for Wednesday's drawing will grow to an estimated $1.3 billion, the Texas Lottery Commission said.

The numbers drawn Saturday were 32, 16, 19, 57 and 34. The Powerball number was 13, with a multiplier of 3.

Saturday's Powerball drawing swelled to $900 million after no one won the $500 million jackpot earlier in the week.

The odds of winning Saturday's monster jackpot were one in 292.2 million. Powerball is played in 44 states, as well as in Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The frenzy leading up to Saturday night's drawing was such that New York state's gaming commission recorded $3.3 million in ticket sales per hour by 4 p.m. ET.

The jackpot began on Nov. 7 and rolled over 19 times before Saturday's drawing, officials said.

Sean Penn Reportedly Interviewed Fugitive Drug Trafficker 'El Chapo' Before His Recapture

Actor and activist Sean Penn turned gonzo journalist and got an interview with the world’s most wanted man, Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, just after the Mexican drug baron escaped from a maximum-security prison, it has emerged.

At his hideouts in the impenetrable hills of western Mexico, Guzmán told the Hollywood star about his drugs business, rags-to-riches life story and how he hired European engineers to help him to slip out of the prison.

Mexican authorities claim they monitored Penn’s movements after they found out about his meeting with Guzmán in October and that helped lead them to a ranch where El Chapo was staying.

Guzmán, fresh from his escape through an expertly engineered tunnel, told Penn in a seven-hour visit and follow-up video for an article published in Rolling Stone: “I supply more heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana than anybody else in the world … I have a fleet of submarines, airplanes, trucks and boats.”

It’s an incredible accumulation of weaponry and wealth for a man who identified himself as a farmer in the last interview he gave more than two decades ago. He told Penn, who says he made contact with the drug lord through the Mexican actor Kate del Castillo, that he had not done drugs in 20 years and that: “I don’t want to be portrayed as a nun.”

Navy marines found Guzmán on Friday at a no-tell motel in the tomato-growing town of Los Mochis – from which he attempted to escape, appropriately enough, through a tunnel. In the end, it appears El Chapo’s Hollywood ambitions cost him.

Mexican officials marched him in front of the media on Friday night at the Mexico City airport, where the attorney general, Arely Gómez, said El Chapo had wanted to make a biopic and reached out to actors and producers. Gómez also said investigators gathered information about potential participants in the film meeting with lawyers representing El Chapo. She did not mention any actors by name, but Penn is the only person to reveal contact with El Chapo.

In his Rolling Stone story, Penn says he got in touch with Guzmán via Del Castillo, star of the narco-themed soap series La Reina del Sur, who made public statements against the Mexican government in 2012, saying: “Today I believe more in Chapo Guzmán than in the governments that hide the truth, even if it’s painful.” She added: “Mr Chapo, wouldn’t it be cool if you started trafficking in love?”

After he was imprisoned Guzmán contacted Del Castillo through his lawyers. At the time Hollywood producers were peppering him with offers to portray his life story. They agreed to produce a film and traded messages via BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) after his escape in July 2015.

Del Castillo accompanied Penn on his trip to interview El Chapo and served as a translator. Penn recalls arriving at El Chapo’s lair, where, “[Guzmán] opens Kate’s door and greets her like a daughter returning from college.”

Penn mentions divisive presidential frontrunner Donald Trump, whose head Guzman reputedly put a $100m bounty on over anti-Latino comments. “Ah! Mi amigo!” Guzmán responds.

In July 2015 Guzmán escaped the Altiplano prison near Mexico City by squeezing through a hole in his cell’s shower area and into a tunnel nearly a mile long. To build the tunnel he flew in German engineers, who advised his workers on how to address a problem of low-lying water under the prison.

After slipping away, federal forces nearly killed him in the Sierra Madre mountains, where he was hiding out. He escaped with only a leg injury, according to details later provided to the media by the Mexican government.

Guzmán recounted the close call in a BBM to Del Castillo: “Two helicopters and 6 BlackHawks began a confrontation upon their arrival. The marines dispersed throughout the farms. The families had to escape and abandon their homes with the fear of being killed.

“We still don’t know how many dead in total.”

Guzmán sent many men to early graves. His attempts to seize the coveted cocaine-trafficking corridor through Ciudad Juárez from the incumbent Juárez cartel turned the border town into the murder capital of the world.

Guzmán appears sanguine about his past, saying: “Well, it’s a reality that drugs destroy.

“Unfortunately, as I said, where I grew up there was no other way and there still isn’t a way to survive.”

Penn often expresses admiration for Guzmán and his exploits, referring to him as a Robin Hood figure in Sinaloa state, showering locals with services. Government statistics still show his home municipality of Badiraguato as one of the poorest in country.

The actor strikes an apologetic tone at times, writing: “I take no pride in keeping secrets that may be perceived as protecting criminals.”

But he also appears anxious to play up perceived virtues. “I took some comfort in a unique aspect of El Chapo’s reputation among the heads of drug cartels in Mexico: that, unlike many of his counterparts who engage in gratuitous kidnapping and murder, El Chapo is a businessman first, and only resorts to violence when he deems it advantageous to himself or his business interests,” Penn writes.

Rolling Stone said it submitted the story to Guzmán for his approval, and he allowed it to run as written.

Guzmán re-entered the Altiplano prison – guarded by tanks – on Friday night. On Saturday, the Mexican government said it started processing extradition orders against Guzmán brought by the US government on drug, murder and money laundering charges.

The attorney general’s office said in a statement: “With the capture of Guzmán Loera it should start the respective extradition proceedings.”

The office added that two federal judges had issued orders for his apprehension and extradition and that Guzmán had 20 days to present evidence in his defense. His lawyers have said they would seek injunctions against extradition – a process that could keep Guzmán in Mexico longer than many in the government might want.

The prospect of extradition has spooked Guzmán previously. He once escaped from the Puente Grande prison in Guadalajara by being wheeled out of the front door in a laundry cart. Press reports said he had run his cartel from the prison, threw parties and ordered in sex workers, but made his escape as extradition proceedings advanced to an uncomfortable point.

The Mexican government opted against extraditing him after his February 2014 arrest. The then attorney general, Jesús Murillo Karam, infamously said Guzmán would eventually arrive in the US – after serving his sentence in Mexico “[in] about 300, 400 years”.

US bomber flies over S. Korea as show of force against North Korea

A powerful US long-range heavy bomber has flown over South Korea as an indication of power from the United States following North Korea’s fourth nuclear test.
US B-52 Stratofortress flew over South Korea on Sunday a few days after North Korea allegedly carried out its first hydrogen bomb test in defiance of international sanctions.
The bomber capable of carrying nuclear weapons briefly flew over the Osan Air Base, located some 72 kilometers (45 miles) south of Seoul, according to the US military and an eye-witness.
The aircraft, which circled once over the airbase before heading home, can be seen as a threat by North Korea.
The B-52 bomber has been used in joint annual US-South Korea military exercises which enraged Pyongyang, however, their flights over South Korea are hardly ever publicized.
It was in 2013 when such a flight was last made public and it happened after North Korea conducted its third nuclear test.
Following the test, the US sent both a B52 and the more sophisticated B2 stealth bomber to South Korea to display its military power against North Korea.
On Wednesday, Pyongyang said it successfully conducted a hydrogen bomb test, hours after seismologists detected an artificial earthquake close to the country's main atomic test site northeast of North Korea.

North Korea's state news agency said in a statement that Pyongyang would continue to build up its nuclear program as deterrence against potential aggression from the United States.
American military experts accused North Korean officials of exaggerating their claims of successfully detonating the nation's first hydrogen bomb.
Kenneth W. Ford, an American physicist who worked on the first American hydrogen bomb, told the New York Times on Thursday that, compared to American H-bombs, the alleged North Korean bomb created too small of an earthquake.
Following the test, Secretary of State John Kerry said that the US military will closely watch the North.
Kerry also asked China to put an end to "business as usual" with North Korea. "Now China had a particular approach that it wanted to make and we agreed and respected to give them the space to be able to implement that, but today in my conversation with the Chinese I made it very clear, that has not worked and we cannot continue business as usual."

Angela Merkel Calls for Tighter Laws on Convicted Migrants

Angela Merkel has said she will back tougher laws on deporting immigrants as far-right protesters marched in Cologne following a string of sex attacks allegedly committed by asylum seekers.

German police used water cannon on Saturday to prevent clashes between supporters of Germany’s far-right Pegida movement and a counter-demonstration by anti-fascists.

At least 32 people are suspected of playing a role in the violence on New Year’s Eve, 22 of whom are in the process of seeking asylum. Of the 32 suspects, nine were Algerian, eight Moroccan, five Iranian and four Syrian. Three German citizens, an Iraqi, a Serb and a US citizen were also identified.

Gangs of men described by some of the alleged victims as being of north African or Arab descent are reported to have robbed, threatened or sexually assaulted 121 women as revellers partied near the city’s Gothic cathedral.

. About 1,700 supporters of Pegida, which says the assaults are proof that Merkel’s liberal migrant policy is failing, and the local far-right group Pro NRW arrived in the city’s main square at 1pm (midday GMT).

Waving German flags and signs reading “Rapefugees not welcome”, “Germany survived war, plague and cholera, but Merkel?”, they shouted “Merkel out”. About 1,300 anti-Pegida protesters held a counter-rally, chanting “Nazis out”.

Leaders of Merkel’s conservative Christian Democrats (CDU) held a policy meeting in the south-western city of Mainz on Saturday to consider tougher penalties for attacks against police and emergency responders and the withdrawal of refugee or asylum seeker status from anyone sentenced to a non-parole prison term.

Under current laws, asylum seekers are only forcibly sent back if they have been sentenced to jail terms of at least three years and if their lives are not at risk in their countries of origin.

The DPA news agency reported that leaders of CDU agreed on a proposal to exclude foreigners who had been convicted of crimes from being granted asylum. They also reportedly agreed to support powers that would strengthen the ability of police to check identity papers.

Merkel said the proposal, which will be discussed with her coalition partners and would need parliamentary approval, would help Germany deport “serial offenders” convicted of lesser crimes.

“This is in the interests of the citizens of Germany, but also in the interests of the great majority of the refugees who are here,” Merkel told party members in Mainz, according to the Associated Press

“If people act outside the law … naturally there must be consequences,” she said. “Serial offenders who consistently, for example, return to theft or time and again insult women must count on the force of the law.”

She has, however, resisted domestic pressure to introduce a formal cap on migrant numbers, repeating her “We can do this” mantra.

Cologne’s police chief, Wolfgang Albers, who had been heavily criticised for his handling of the violence and police communications afterwards, was dismissed on Friday.

The city’s mayor, Henriette Reker, suggested that police had held back information from her and that her trust in the Cologne police leadership was “significantly shaken”.

A leaked police report, obtained by the German newspaper Bild, said women were forced to “run a gauntlet … beyond description” to reach or leave the station.

Cologne police said on Friday that they had arrested two males aged 16 and 23 with “north African roots” on suspicion of involvement in the assaults. The federal police documented 76 criminal acts, most them involving some form of theft, and seven linked to sexual assault.

The German interior ministry spokesman Tobias Plate did not say if any of the suspects had been charged. “The investigations are ongoing,” he said.

Amateur videos from the night show groups of young men jumping around chaotically, shooting fireworks into the crowd and pushing bystanders. A full police report on the evening is due in the coming days.

The CDU has called for tougher penalties against offending asylum seekers in response. A draft paper seen by Reuters before the party leadership’s meeting in Mainz said migrants who had been sentenced to prison or probation should be ineligible for asylum.

“Why should German taxpayers pay to imprison foreign criminals?” said the vice-chancellor, Sigmar Gabriel, who leads the Social Democrats (SPD), Merkel’s coalition partner.

The CDU paper calls for lower barriers to the deportation of criminal asylum seekers, increased video surveillance and the creation of a new criminal offence of physical assault.

The incidents in and around the square in front of Cologne’s main train station have led to accusations of a police and media cover-up to avoid anti-foreigner sentiment following Merkel’s open-door policy towards refugees and migrants. About 1.1 million refugees and migrants arrived in Germany last year, far more than in any other European country, most of them fleeing war or deprivation in the Middle East.

Evidence has emerged that similar attacks had taken place in seven other German cities. After Cologne, Hamburg appears to have been the worst affected. Of 167 complaints of attacks made to police - around two-thirds of them being described as sexual assault, including two cases of rape – 100 relate to Cologne and 53 to Hamburg.

The Daily Show rips Fox News for accusing Obama of fake-crying about gun violence

On Tuesday, America President Barack Obama teared up as he announced executive actions on guns and described some of the gun violence that has killed children around the US. "Every time I think about those kids, it gets me mad," Obama said as he wiped tears. "It happens on the streets of Chicago every day."

Then Fox News decided to mock him for it. "I would check that podium for, like, a raw onion," host Andrea Tantaros said. "It's not really believable."

But The Daily Show's Trevor Noah was not having it. "Are you fucking kidding me?" he said. "Shedding tears when you think of murdered children is not really believable? You know what? There is something here that's not really believable: the fact that the rest of us have to share the title of human being with you

There's a lot of history behind Obama's emotional plea on guns. The president has consistently cited his inability to pass significant gun control legislation as one of his greatest frustrations while in office. After multiple mass shootings, he has pleaded with the general public and Congress time and time again to support new restrictions on firearms — but congressional Republicans won't budge, in large part due to the powerful gun lobby and gun culture in the US.

So Obama decided to act on his own.

His executive actions include an attempt to tighten — but not close — the "gun show loophole" (which allows some gun sellers to avoid carrying out background checks) and hire more staff to conduct federal background checks, among other changes. But the actions are fairly small, limited to ensuring that existing laws are more strictly enforced instead of imposing new restrictions on firearms.

On the other hand, he is also not interested in campaigning for TDP-BJP combine for GHMC elections. Even TDP National President and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu is also not showing much interest in GHMC polls. Hence Pawan Kalyan is not keen on campaigning.

Mexican Drug Trafficker El Chapo Arrested

Notorious Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, who broke out of a maximum security prison through an elaborate tunnel seven months ago, has been recaptured, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto announced Friday.

"Mission accomplished — we have him," Peña Nieto said on Twitter.

The Mexican Navy said in a statement that marines, acting on a tip, raided a home before dawn in the city of Los Mochis, in Guzman’s home state of Sinaloa. The assault team was fired upon from inside the structure.

Five suspects were killed and six others arrested. One marine was wounded, but did not sustain life-threatening injuries.

California Govrnor Jerry Brown Declares State of Emergency in City Over Widespread Gas Leak

Gov. Jerry Brown on Wednesday ordered new regulations, including stepped-up inspections and safety measures, for all natural gas storage facilities in California in response to the continuing leak that has displaced thousands of people in the Porter Ranch neighborhood of Los Angeles.

The emergency regulations would require Southern California Gas Co. and other operators of gas storage facilities to conduct daily inspections of wellheads using infrared leak-detection technology, verify the mechanical integrity of wells, measure gas flow and pressure and regularly test safety valves, among other steps.

Each facility would also have to draft a risk management plan that would examine the corrosion potential of pipes and other safety threats.

China Yuvan....

The Chinese New Year, which kicks off on 8 February, is around the corner. Astrologically, it’s the year of the monkey. As far as the markets are concerned, though, it may as well be the year of the Chinese yuan.

The first full trading week of the calendar year certainly seems to point to that. The Chinese equity market has been halted for trade twice already this week due to a sharp fall in the indices. The trading halt on Monday was driven by a few factors, including the weak Chinese Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI), but the resumption of the depreciation in the yuan was an underlying fear. On Thursday, when the Yuan was pegged lower by half a per cent, the Chinese equity market was once again frozen at the lower circuit of 7%.

To understand why the market is in panic mode, let us rewind to last year.
In August 2015, when China first devalued the yuan and subsequently signalled a more market driven exchange rate, the key questions being asked were: how quickly and how far will China let the yuan weaken? Are we looking at a 5% devaluation or something more significant? As things stand, the devaluation has already moved beyond the 5% mark.After an initial devaluation from 6.2 levels against the dollar, the yuan settled at close to the 6.4 mark, and then remained around there till about December. However, over the past one month, the depreciation has resumed and the Chinese currency has moved down to near 6.6 levels.

Since the end of July 2015, the onshore yuan has already fallen by 6%. The offshore yuan has fallen by a steeper 7.5% and is now at its lowest level seen in more than five years. The spread between the onshore and offshore yuan has also been widening, which the markets are seeing as an indicator of more weakness to come in the official currency rate. This belief stems from the Chinese government’s intention to allow the currency fix to be more market determined, which allowed it an entry into the elite Special Drawing Rights (SDR) basket of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

To be sure, few believe that China will allow market forces to move the currency to levels beyond what it is comfortable with. On 30 December, Reuters reported that China had moved to suspend the foreign exchange operations of some foreign banks. The move was seen as part of an effort to stem excessive speculation in the market, Reuters had reported. Still, the markets aren’t ruling out further depreciation in the Yuan this year. In a note on 6 January, HSBC Global Research wrote that the markets should be prepared for the risk of further depreciation in the Chinese currency in the near term.
“...seasonal factors such as corporates’ front-loading FX (forex) hedging and the reset in Chinese individuals’ $50,000 annual FX conversion quota, could lead to increased USD (US dollar) demand at the beginning of 2016. Growth and credit risk headlines could also add to the headwinds for the currency...,” said HSBC analysts, adding that pressure on the currency may abate after the second half of 2016.

Whether this pressure means that the depreciation in the yuan will move closer to 10% levels or more is the moot point. With China’s forex reserves falling by a massive $108 billion in December, China’s ability to stem the fall in the Yuan, while still substantial, may stand reduced. Some are of the view that the impact of the yuan depreciation on global asset markets may be more muted this time around compared to what was seen in August last year.

Deutsche Bank analysts took this particular view in a report earlier this week and said that the “beta” of global currencies to weakness in the Chinese currency will be lower now than in August 2015. The “novelty” of a weaker yuan is wearing off, they said. That may be true. After all, market reaction to known unknowns tends to be more manageable. That logic, however, will not hold true if the global markets believe that this is the long-feared hard landing in China. The view on that is divided. Veteran investor, George Soros, told Bloomberg News that the adjustment in China amounts to a crisis. Stephen Roach, formerly of Morgan Stanley, took a different view and told Bloomberg TV that the “hard landing school” was wrong. All India can do is manage the situation. The domestic equity markets will undoubtedly respond to global volatility in the short term. There is no getting away from that no matter how hard we pitch our relatively better fundamentals to the global investor community. In the long term, we may stand to benefit if fund flows are redirected our way. The rupee markets, too, will directionally follow the yuan like all other Asian currencies. The rupee has adjusted each time there has been a meaningful move in the yuan, although the quantum of depreciation differs. Since end-July, the rupee has fallen nearly 4%, compared with the 5.27% drop in the yuan. The Reserve Bank of India has smoothed over any jerky moves and that will continue.
The upside is that turmoil in China may mean that commodity prices remain in check for longer. Lower commodities have been key to the fiscal consolidation we have seen this year. It has also been important in keeping inflation pressures in check and has allowed for an expansion in operating margins for companies. We could do with that help for another year.

Quikr snaps up CommonFloor, joins Unicorn Club

After months of resisting a potential merger, CommonFloor finally acquiesced. Quikr on Thursday announced acquisition of the property search website for an undisclosed amount in a majority stock-swap transaction, which will give CommonFloor access to the online classifieds firm's vast customer base.

After the deal, Quikr will be valued at about $1.5 billion (about Rs 10,000 crore) based on the share-swap ratio, a person directly involved in the transaction said. This will catapult it into the rarefied club of Indian Unicorns, or companies worth at least a billion dollars. CommmonFloor, which has built a robust technology platform for home hunters, was unable to raise fund or monetise its business model.

But it presented a right fit for Quikr, which is pursuing a new strategy of building key segments as independent businesses. The deal values it at $100-120 million (Rs 665-800 crore), other sources said, declining to be identified. While neither company confirmed the number, that is a steep drop from a year ago when CommonFloor was valued at about $160 million in its last funding round.

ET first reported about the CommonFloor-Quikr deal in its October 2 edition. Talks between the two companies had been going on for the last 6-7 months. New York-based investment firm Tiger Global Management is an investor in both the companies. The purchase comes just four months after Quikr launched its own home search business, QuikrHomes.
The company said the two brands will operate independently, while benefitting from each other. The merger is expected to be completed over the next two to three months. "(This) will give CommonFloor.com access to Quikr's 30 million consumers and harness the potential of the cross category nature of the platform, while Quikr-Homes will benefit from CommonFloor's structured data and domain expertise," Quikr said in a joint statement.

A property expert suggested that the main problem for CommonFloor was its inability to make its service pay. "When monetisation becomes a challenge, then consolidation is expected," said Ashwinder Raj Singh, chief executive of residential services at JLL India, a real estate consultancy. "Ultimately you have to build services that end-consumers are willing to pay for.

Clearly looks like Common-Floor was not in the driver's seat." Pranay Chulet, founder and CEO of Quikr, in the statement said, "We see great synergies between us and CommonFloor. We both believe in creating businesses that are strong on growth as well as monetisation..." Sumit Jain, cofounder and CEO of CommonFloor, in an email to employees said QuikrHomes and CommonFloor together would have the scale, depth, breath and capabilities to operate more effectively and profitably.

"The idea is to operate both the brands but having different positioning. We will go 10x more aggressive on CF Groups," Jain said in the email, which ET has a copy of. CommonFloor Groups is a discussion forum and directory for residents' associations to exchange information as well as handle association finances through the platform. Jain assured job security to his employees, adding, "The only impact (the deal) could have is that we have a larger canvas to work with and will give new impetus to bring forward innovative products."

Jain and his cofounders Vikas Malpani and Lalit Mangal had denied the merger talks on social media in October. Quikr, while not giving specifics, in its statement said the two companies had the same technology stack and that the CommonFloor team would have expanded scope across Quikr's four other verticals to accelerate its growth.

CommonFloor, owned by maxHeap Technologies, is backed by venture capital firm Accel Partners and Google Capital, besides Tiger Global, which owns a majority stake. The company, founded in 2008, has raised more than $60 million in funding. The transaction is the second consolidation in India's realty classifieds space in the past year, following Proptiger's acquisition of Makaan in April 2015.

In December, ET reported that CommonFloor's rival Housing-.com, too, had begun discussions with Snapdeal and News Corp for a strategic stake sale. Quikr, which was founded in 2008 with initial funding from Matrix Partners, has since raised more than $350 million from a slew of investors including Omidyar Network, Norwest Venture Partners, Nokia Growth Partners, Tiger Global, Warburg Pincus and Kinnevik.

The company recently made two other acquisitions for QuikrHomes A real-estate analytics platform Realty-Compass and Indian Realty Exchange (IRX), a mobile-first aggregator of real estate agents. The Benagluru-based startup also invested in street view mapping service WoNo-Bo in October. CommonFloor competes with Housing.com, PropTiger, 99Acres, and MagicBricks, owned by the publisher of this paper.
